This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the roles and responsibilities in managing and leading within a workplace, particularly focusing on construction or project environments. The class is structured around four main modules:
- Management vs Leadership: This section delves into the fundamental differences and responsibilities between managers and leaders, covering topics like decision making, company policies, and the implementation of best practices. It also introduces the concept of the “3-Legged Stool,” emphasizing the balance between technical skills, operations, and leadership.
- Jobsite Relationships: Students will learn about the dynamics of relationships on construction sites, including interactions with coworkers, other trades, general contractors, project managers, estimators, OSHA, and inspectors. This module is crucial for understanding how to navigate and foster positive relationships in a complex project environment.
- Planning: This module focuses on the strategic aspects of project management, such as developing contingency plans (Planning A, B, C…), removing obstacles, and effectively allocating resources like materials, tools, equipment, and manpower. Students will also study how to manage contract documents, specifications, blueprints, and paperwork, alongside distinguishing between productive and non-productive tasks.
- Leadership/Communication: The final segment emphasizes the importance of communication in leadership roles. It covers how people learn and the essentials of effective communication—including speaking, listening, questioning, and both verbal and non-verbal cues. This part of the course is designed to enhance students’ abilities to lead effectively and responsibly.
Overall, the class aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage and lead in their respective roles, ensuring that they are capable of both overseeing detailed operations and inspiring their teams to achieve organizational objectives.
