IEC Atlanta & Georgia Chapters presents . . .

Load Calculations

Date: February 26, 2026
Time: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: Live via Zoom

Course Overview

This class is designed for electrical contractors and team members who perform load calculations when designing and sizing electrical services. Whether you are working on a single-family residence, multifamily property, commercial building, or industrial facility, accurate load calculations are critical to ensuring the service is properly sized to meet the customer’s power demands.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of how to calculate service loads in accordance with code requirements and industry best practices. This training supports estimators by helping ensure adequate budgeting for materials and equipment based on true load requirements. It also equips service technicians with the knowledge needed to evaluate existing services—especially when customers are planning expansions or additions—to determine whether upgrades are necessary.

Proper load calculations are essential to delivering safe, reliable, and code-compliant electrical systems. This course reinforces why accurate service sizing is not just a technical requirement, but a fundamental responsibility for professionals in the electrical industry.

What You Will Learn

  • How to accurately perform service load calculations in accordance with NEC code requirements and industry best practices
  • How to properly size electrical services for single-family, multifamily, commercial, and industrial applications
  • How to apply load calculations to support accurate estimating and material budgeting
  • How to evaluate existing services to determine if upgrades are required for expansions or additions

Instructor: Mike Gunter

I have been in the electrical industry for 34 years. I started my career as an electrician in the field before transitioning into an estimating position at Electrical Contractor Inc. I worked as an estimator for 26 years before retiring.

After my retirement, I began teaching at the IEC apprenticeship program, where I have been involved for 27 years. Currently, I teach Code to the 4th-year apprentices and hold the position of Level 3 Instructor at the IEC.

I was appointed to the National Apprenticeship and Training Committee, where I contributed to the development and improvement of training programs for our industry for 10 years. Additionally, I have written curriculum for the 2nd and 3rd-year programs and played a role in creating the new “ESTS” Electrical Systems Training program. I have also developed new curricula for our skills-based training programs for levels one and two, as well as for our solar program.

Furthermore, I created an estimating course for electricians interested in becoming estimators and teach an advanced estimating class that includes training on McCormick Estimating software. In 2023, I was appointed to serve on the NFPA Code Making Panel 14 to represent the IEC organization.

I enjoy working with new electrical apprentices and helping them prepare for their futures in the electrical industry.
